Cabin Porn - Where We Want To Go Now More Than Ever

Remember the times, when we went for virtual house hunting? At places where we spent holidays, we went window shopping at the local brokers office, later on, advanced, on websites, becoming more sophisticated and specific over the years.

Farms upstate New York, cottages in the South of France or in Surrey, that county South West of London, where Cary Grant came from. We dreamed of town houses in Brooklyn or a loft in the Marais, maybe an apartment in Barcelona. All that seemed just common sense: if you´d ever got the money some day, you would buy a place you longed to be whenever not working at your home base.

Those days are gone. The last months told us a thing or two about the fragile concept of weekend travelling, border crossings - and most of all: About earning money. All of a sudden it seems very likely that our concept of planet hopping and getting away from where we are might be much more complicated than we ever might have imagined.

That brought me to Zach Klein´s beautiful idea of Cabin Porn and his brilliant website and books about "Inspiration for your quiet place somewhere", thanks to my good friend Lukas who surfs those pages since forever and had introduced me to the founder of "Vimeo" - among other very successful projects - who came up with the idea of sampling cabins all over the world. Somewhere in the loneliness of eternal woods, close to shores or a tiny lake, in the snow or under an eternal sun.

All of them unique. All of them simple, handmade mostly, affordable - but deeply inspirational.

Now I visit that site nearly every day, I flip through the pages of the two beautifully done books and I dream about going out into the wilderness, to places far, far away from London, Paris or New York - and therefore much more in reach for budgets we might achieve even under circumstances that are not as prosperous as they used to be.

And I realise: Sometimes it takes only two, three months to change our perspectives on a place you call home.
