Pavillon Le Corbusier At Lake Zurich - Call It By Her Name

This most spectacular building by Swiss architect Le Corbusier, and also his last, would not exist without the powerful, brave engagement of a single woman: Heidi Weber sold her private house and all her belongings to finance this famous last project of Switzerland´s most important architect in 1965; actually, she brought him back from France, where he lived the longest time before.

She helped him produce his furniture and wanted to place a monument of his work - and to give an interested pubic the chance to learn more about the person Le Corbusier, his style and his art.

When the lease agreement ended some years ago, she decided to donate the building to the city of Zurich - and since this summer, it is open again for the public. I took the chance at one of the last days before the winter closing to visit the house together with some friends from Germany.

When I got our tickets, I realized, that the museum now was just called "Le Corbusier Pavillon" - no mentioning of Heidi Weber, just a tiny note at one of the walls in one of the rooms! Then I found out, that the old lady, still vividly alive at the age of 93, is fighting for the rights to get her name involved again - but is not succeeding so far.

Zurich´s mayor Corinne Mauch claimed on a press conference last May, Heidi Weber would not have wanted to get her name included - but who would believe her!

I hope, Ms Weber lives long enough to get the fame she so rightfully should have earned - and the architectual world will speak of the "Heidi Weber Pavillon by Le Corbusier" as we speak for instance of the "Freeman House" and every other house by Frank Lloyd Wright and even of the "Guggenheim-Museum".
