The Talkies

Although I always loved the movies I never entered that certain nerd level until I had a boyfriend who was obsessed with movies.

It was the era of video rentals and we spent often two to three hours at "our" store until we decided what to watch; my boyfriend was very much into "B"-movies, most of those films had never seen the glamorous lights of a theater but went straight to video. I was more into classsic Hollywood, those movies I was to to young to have watched in a proper theater.

Until we ended up with at least two different films from our distant corners I learnt a lot. Often joined by one of the boys who worked the store (never girls, actually) and appreciated our interest he added some more knowledge having had watched actually EVERY movie available.

Two men who used to belong to those boys just started a podcast with that very flavour.

Director Quentin Tarantino and screenwriter/producer Roger Avary both worked at Video Archives, a VHS rental store in Manhattan Beach, California, in the 1980s (though not at the same time). “It was like the real cool used-record store in town, except it was a video store, with all the music heads and the wannabe musicians and the archivists that worked there,” enthuses Avary. “We watched movies all day and we talked about movies all day,” says Tarantino. “We debated and argued and saw everything that was out there.”

Having received an Oscar for their "Pulp Fiction" script they later fell out as friends an co-writers leaving Tarantino to one of those dream careers and Avary to a mediocre life, including a brief prison stint for killing his friend in a car accident.

You might not like the hysterically specific way those guys talk about movies - I just love it when it leads to directors I admire and their movies I do not know yet. Like Michael Mann´s "The Keep".

Your will get more details than you ever want to know - but then you will definitely want to watch the movie.

Sadly enough you cannot get it from a video store anymore - those places are closed. You will have to rent it at amazon prime.
